AND I SAW ANOTHER MIGHTY ANGEL COME DOWN FROM HEAVEN PASTOR HOWARD DANIEL, JR. SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 5, 2016 SCRIPTURE READING: REVELATION 10:1-4
|

Revelation 10:1, And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: |
1. | BACKGROUND | |
a. | Please refer to the February 28, 2016 Evening Message for the Background |
2. | INTRODUCTION | |
a. | Chapter 10 of Revelation starts off with another pause between the sixth and seventh trumpet.
b. | The last pause we had was in Chapter 7. The reason for this pause between the sixth and seventh seal is explained in Revelation 7:1-2, And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2: And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3: Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
c. | As a result of the aforementioned pause two groups are mentioned; 144,000 Jewish missionaries and a redeemed multitude of Gentiles.
d. | In this Chapter there is another pause between the sixth and seventh trumpet.
e. | We must pay very close attention to this to avoid getting off into strange territory and error.
f. | Between the sixth and seventh trumpet we are going to see there are three personalities introduced.
g. | The action of the mighty angel is described in the first 14 verses of Chapter 11.
h. | The names of the two witnesses that God is going to use are not identified at this time.
i. | With that introduction let’s look at Chapter 10. |
3. | THREE POINTS TO THE MESSAGE
a. | And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven,
1. | Revelation 10:1, And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
2. | Notable Bible scholars that really love the Lord have indicated to us that this mighty angel is the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. | His identity is seven fold.
a. | He is mighty | |||
b. | He came down from Heaven
c. | He is clothed with a cloud
d. | His face is like the sun
e. | His feet are as pillars of fire
f. | In his hand is a little book that is open
g. | He has one foot on the land and one foot on the sea. Psalms 24:1, The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
4. | However, I find that there is ample evidence to show that the angel is only a mighty angel, an ambassador for Christ.
5. | We must be very careful to not speak of the Lord Jesus Christ whom we saw in the first Chapter as the Glorified Christ and in Chapter 19 as the rider of the white horse, and refer to Him as an angel.
6. | It is true that in the Old Testament the pre-incarnate Christ was seen as the angel of the Lord on several occasions.
7. | But after He rose from the dead and ascended in to Heaven with His glorified body and all power was given unto Him in Heaven and in Earth. Matthew 28:18, And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
8. | He is no longer to be referred to as an angel.
9. | Some have even said that the Lord Jesus Christ is Michael.
10. | This is far from the truth my friend.
11. | He is revealed in the Book of Revelation as the Glorified Christ; He is exalted to the right hand of the Father and is coming again as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Revelation 19:16, And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
12. | It is well to keep in mind that the Book of Revelation is the unveiling of the Lord Jesus Christ.
13. | He is now the One who is judging a Christ-rejecting world.
14. | Notice “And I saw another mighty angel” – the word another has significance.
15. | It means that it is another of the same kind. The other strong angel to whom we would be referring to is back in Revelation 5:2, And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
16. | There is no argument that this was not the Lord Jesus Christ; this was an angel who is a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.
17. | This is evident that both are special envoys of Christ.
18. | We have a President of the United States and he sends ambassadors or representatives.
19. | This angel is representing the Lord Jesus Christ.
20. | Notice he come down from Heaven and is clothed with a cloud. “another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:”
21. | This is a special cloud that is associated with the second coming of Jesus Christ.
22. | As you recall, we preached about the ascension of Jesus, taken up in a cloud from the Mount of Olives. Acts 1:11, Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
23. | Although this angel is not the Lord Jesus Christ he is associated with Him.
24. | He is carrying out the will of Jesus Christ.
25. | The angel announced his first coming and will also announce the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to Earth.
26. | “and a rainbow was upon his head,” – This indicates that his head dress was a covenant that was made with man at some point in time in the Old Testament where God described that He would not destroy the Earth again by water.
27. | The rainbow indicates that God will not send a flood to destroy mankind. Genesis 9:13, I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
28. | “and his face was as it were the sun,” – This identifies this angel. This is actually the signature of the glorified Christ. Revelation 1:16, And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
29. | Moses, after he had been in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in Exodus 34, indicates that there was radiance or a shining. Exodus 34:29-30, And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. 30: And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.
30. | This angel is shining because he has stood in the very presence of God.
31. | The angel, at the resurrection of Christ, also shown. Luke 24:4, And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
32. | The angel in Revelation 18 is a light giver. Revelation 18:1, And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
33. | This is a special ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ.
34. | Notice his feet: “and his feet as pillars of fire:” – This is still part of the uniform that this angel bears.
35. | He has come to make a special solemn announcement of coming judgment upon the Earth.
36. | The features are identification and his credentials correctly identify him as a special ambassador for Jesus Christ.
37. | The Lord Jesus is in charge of everything.
38. | He is the judge of all the earth. John 5:22, For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: |
b. | And he had in his hand a little book open:
1. | Revelation 10:2-3, And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, 3: And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.
2. | Numerous Bible Scholars have identified the little book open as the seven seal book that was referred to in Revelation 5:1, And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
3. | A careful study of Revelation 10:2, reveals “the little book” as a similar mission as that given in Ezekiel 3:1-3, Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel. 2: So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll. 3: And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness. Jeremiah 15:16, Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
4. | I firmly believe this “little book” is the prophetic Word of God which speaks of the wonderful plan for mankind including the coming of Christ, the Millennium Kingdom and Heaven. But it also contains the judgments of God on sinners who do not repent and come to Him which will result in their consignment to Hell.
5. | It is open and it reveals a blessing for believers and a judgement for unbelievers. John is told, later, to eat it, which simply means that we are to assimilate the Word of God.
6. | The Bible is a living book. When we eat it, it gives us strength to live a victorious life. Jesus Christ is our source of power. Studying the Bible is more important than anything else in our daily lives. It is not to be privately interpreted but the Holy Spirit will teach us and guide us into all truth. 2 Peter 1:20, Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 2 Timothy 2:15, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
7. | In laying down His life, He also has to come back and take control of the entire universe.
8. | Notice that one foot is on the sea and the other on the Earth. This means God is in control of all and all belongs to Him.
9. | Remember the open book indicates both blessing and judgment while on display.
10. | The book is the angel’s authority; proclaiming both the sea and the earth for the Lord Jesus Christ. He puts one foot on the sea and the other on the earth.
11. | Leviticus 25:23 is instructions for the land. The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me. Psalms 24:1, The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
12. | God not only claims the land but He claims the sea as well which indicates all of mankind. Psalms 8:6-8, Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 7: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8: The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
13. | God is saying that He owns the sea as well as the land. He has told us many times that man is a tenant on the earth.
14. | We walk the Earth as if we own it; but in the final analysis it belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ.
15. | We also belong to the Lord and our next breath is given because of His power. |
c. | And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices,
1. | Revelation 10:4, And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.
2. | John is told that the seven thunders are not to be written.
3. | Revelation 1:11, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
4. | “The Seven Church Ages” according to Don Koenig:
a. | The messages to the Seven Churches were to seven actual historic Churches that existed in John’s time.
b. | They were not the most prominent churches but they were picked because God has a message to give to all the believers who will ever live during the Church Age.
c. | We see here in these letters that He is working with His Church until the end of the Church age.
d. | The entire Church age is from the time of the giving of the promise of a new Covenant at Pentecost until she unites with Jesus in heaven.
e. | There are seven periods within this age.
f. | The first three periods in Revelation have been fulfilled historically.
g. | We know this because each of the first three were replaced by a successor and there is no mention of the Lord’s coming in the first three.
1. | Ephesus – the Apostolic Church – until the death of John 32 – 100 AD
2. | Smyrna – The martyred Church – until Christianity became the religion of the Roman Empire – 100 – 312 AD.
3. | Pergamum – – The Church that joined the state – until the Papacy – 312 – 600 AD (approx.)
h. | The messages to all seven Churches are still valid to all who live on the earth today but only the last four letters deal with the historic assemblies that are still dwelling on earth until Jesus returns for them.
i. | To avoid confusion, it is essential to understand that the letter was addressed to seven assemblies in existence at the time of John.
j. | Not all people in any of the original assemblies were truly Christian.
k. | The message content from Jesus to the Seven Churches should makes this clear as does the New Testament epistles to the Churches.
l. | If there is a prophetic application with the Church through time as I believe, it also is critical to understand that the message from Jesus to the last four assemblies is to true believers and traditional cultural Christians alike.
m. | Just like there were believing descendants of Israel and unbelieving descendants of Israel. The letters in Revelation to the Churches are to all who identify with these Christian assemblies and not just to the true believers within them.
n. | The last four remaining churches on earth:
1. | Thyatira is the Roman Catholic Church and the eastern Orthodox Churches.
a. | At the end, this assembly will be tried by death. The passage seems to imply that most in this assembly are cast into great tribulation and that the descendants of this Church are killed in the Tribulation.
b. | This Church has good works but most were in adultery with mystery Babylon.
2. | Sardis is the Church of the reformation that has become spiritually dead.
a. | They are the liberal and ritualistic churches that have no good works.
b. | This includes many main line Protestant denomination churches in the world today, and certainly includes most of the state churches of Europe.
c. | God says they will not know the time of his coming and that they will not be ready when He comes.
d. | They will go through Great Tribulation.
3. | Philadelphia, like Enoch, was pleasing to God.
a. | This assembly has an open door (world evangelism) that no one can shut (not even Satan).
b. | She has some power (God’s Spirit), she kept the word (the Bible) and does not deny the name of Jesus.
c. | This Church also kept the Word of His patience (Jesus coming for the Church) and because of this she, like Enoch, will be removed from the Earth before the judgment on Earth (Great Tribulation).
d. | The Church of Philadelphia is many of those in the Evangelical and Pentecostal assemblies.
4. | Laodicea is the wealthy Protestant churches of today that are self-centered country clubs.
a. | It could also be those that “say” they are rich in spirit but are full of dead works.
b. | She is spewed out of Jesus’ mouth and becomes identified with the harlot of Revelation.
c. | She is rich in material goods but she is poor spiritually. God is outside looking in (no indwelling spirit).
d. | This assembly will be chastened in the tribulation but those individuals that seek Jesus will find Him.
e. | This group probably includes most “possibility thinking” and “Word of Faith” churches.
f. | It certainly includes some “seeker friendly” Churches that have watered down Christian doctrine and worship to make it appealing to the world It would also include the emerging and emergent church movement that redefines essentials truths of Christianity.
g. | It may also include some charismatics who think they are rich spiritually but have gone off into new age theology and doctrine of demons.
h. | It could even possibly include some cults that are in great heresy but who do not deny that Jesus is Lord.
5. | John says he was about to write and was forbidden not to do so.
6. | This is the only place in the Book of Revelation where things are sealed.
7. | God makes it clear. He told us everything we need to know.
8. | He is not holding anything back from true believers and those who are willing to dig out the nuggets of the Word of God, yielding to the Holy Spirit for understanding.
9. | When God says it is sealed and not write it, we are not to go there. Revelation 22:10, And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
10. | We are given a message from the seven thunders that John is not permitted to write down.
11. | It is interesting that God has withheld it from us but we do not go there because we don’t speculate on the Word of God. |
4. | CONCLUSION | |
a. | My sinner friend, if you don’t know Jesus as personal Saviour, none of this is possible for you.
b. | Would you come to the side of the living Saviour today?
c. | Regardless of the fact that we have projected ourselves into eternity, the present is we must come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in this life.
d. | If we don’t know Him, we will be subjected to the wrath of God.
e. | The Bible says in Romans 3:23, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
f. | Romans 3:10, As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
g. | Romans 10:9-10, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10: For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
h. | Matthew 11:28-29, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
i. | Would you come to the side of the living Saviour today and be saved.
j. | Please stand. |
