MINISTRY OF THE WORD
AND THE FIFTH ANGEL SOUNDED AND I SAW A STAR FALL FROM HEAVEN PASTOR HOWARD DANIEL, JR. SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 22, 2016 SCRIPTURE READING: REVELATION 9:1-10
|
||
Revelation 9:1, And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. |
1. | BACKGROUND | |
a. | Please refer to the February 28, 2016 Evening Message for the Background. |
2. | INTRODUCTION | |
a. | There are a lot of things that the wrath of God has affected.
b. | Let’s take a look at Chapter 9 as we draw closer to the greater intensity of the Tribulation Period.
c. | Revelation 14:20 records the fact that blood will run to the horse bridles. Revelation 14:20, And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
d. | Four trumpets have already sounded and we have three left to give forth their sound.
e. | These three trumpets are separated from the other four trumpets because they are the trumpets of woe. Revelation 8:13, And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
f. | These three angels are about to sound those trumpets and they are associated with the second part of the great Tribulation Period; the last three and one half years.
g. | They are poured out on a Christ rejecting world by Satan himself, who has possession of the keys to the bottomless pit.
h. | Remember the Church is not here; it is in Heaven with Christ. Titus 2:13, Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
i. | All of these woes are strictly associated with the Earth.
j. | These woes represent the darkest and most painful and intense period of the earth ever.
k. | They are associated with the seventy weeks of Daniel’s prophesy. Daniel 9:24, Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
l. | We must be careful with this section that we don’t privately interpret the Word by speculation thereby arriving at false conclusions.
m. | We will continue to follow the literal interpretation of the Scriptures unless John tells us to do otherwise.
n. | We will look at several things that will require us to go to other passages of Scripture in order to get our Biblical support so that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. |
3. | SIX POINTS TO THE MESSAGE
a. | And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven.
1. | Revelation 9:1, And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2. | Let’s identify who this star is that falls from Heaven onto the Earth. Isaiah 14:12 indicates “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” The aforementioned passage identifies Lucifer who we know to be Satan himself.
3. | Isaiah foresaw this development which is the same as John describes in vivid detail. People mistakenly believe that Satan has been banished from Heaven and that he reigns in some kingdom associated with Hell. This is simply not the case. Satan has always had access to the throne of God where he serves as principle accuser of the brethren. Let’s support our conclusion from Scripture. Revelation 12:10, And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. Job 1:6, Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
4. | We see the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy in our present verse under consideration. Here we note that the entry into God’s presence has changed. Satan is now kicked out of Heaven and he is furious. He carries with him the keys to the bottomless pit that was freely given to him by the Lord Jesus Christ.
5. | Christ states emphatically, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Revelation 1:18
6. | He was an eyewitness to this. “a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.”
7. | This is not like any star in the sky because this star has the keys to the bottomless pit.
8. | This star has intelligence and is able to do things.
9. | We firmly believe by comparing scripture with scripture that this star is Satan.
10. | This is not the anti-Christ as some have said.
11. | We have been careful to give Scriptural basis for our conclusion. We must remember that Isaiah foresaw this Isaiah 14:12, How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! And it is fulfilled in Revelation 9:1, And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
12. | The aforementioned Scripture gives us a clear view of Satan himself.
13. | This is the only time in the Word of God that Lucifer is used to identify him as he really is.
14. | We know Lucifer was one of the arch-angels who lost his estate because he rebelled against God and iniquity was found in him. Ezekiel 28:15, Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
15. | Jesus Christ says in Luke 10:18, And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
16. | The Apostle Paul also says 2 Corinthians 11:14, And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
17. | The Scriptures confirm the position that Satan is in view when John says that Satan was cast out of heaven. Revelation 12:7-9, And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8: And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9: And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
18. | Looking at our main verse we can see that the star is in fact Satan. “And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.”
19. | Some time ago we looked at the underworld.
20. | We learned that in the lower parts of the earth there was the bottomless pit and hell.
21. | Hell is divided into two sections.
22. | There was the paradise side which is called Abraham’s bosom and the torment side where the rich man went and begged Abraham to send Lazarus to come and cool his tongue. Luke 16:22-23, And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23: And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
23. | There are other aspects of this arena in the lower parts of the earth.
a. | The Lake of Fire (Matthew 25:44-45; Revelation 19:20,
Revelation 20:10, Revelation 20:14-15) |
|||
b. | The bottomless pit (Revelation. 9:1)
c. | Torment side of Hell and Paradise (Luke 16:19-31)
d. | Chains of darkness (2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6).
24. | Let’s take a closer look at the underworld.
25. | The fifth angel has sounded. John says, “and I saw”
26. | First he is cast out into the earth; secondly, he is given the key to the bottomless pit.
27. | To have a key represent authority and power.
28. | God is permitting Satan to have the key of the bottomless pit that is located in the underworld.
29. | When the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified and buried the Bible says that He descended into the lower parts of the earth.
30. | There has been some confusion with this; let’s clear it up.
31. | Jesus Christ did not go into the torment side of hell and give the people there a second chance.
32. | He went into the Paradise side where believers went when they died before the cross.
33. | Luke 6:19-31 confirms this. 19: There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21: And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22: And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23: And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24: And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25: But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26: And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27: Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: 28: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29: Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30: And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31: And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
34. | The rich man died and lifted up his eyes and saw Lazarus in the paradise side and he was in the torment side. Do not forget that there is a great gulf fixed and no one is able to pass from one side to the other.
35. | Then something amazing happens. Ephesians 4:8-10, Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. 9: (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10: He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
36. | The location of the Paradise side has moved to the third heaven and is no longer in the heart of the earth; it is now empty. 2 Corinthians 12:2, I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
37. | It is very important that we keep these things in mind otherwise we will have mass confusion.
38. | Where the Bible is silent we must also be silent.
39. | We must always run references; lay scripture side by side then we can come out with God’s truth.
40. | The Holy Spirit will teach us if we are willing to learn.
41. | Who holds the keys to the bottomless pit at the current time? Jesus Christ. Revelation 1:18, I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. 2 Peter 2:4, For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; Luke 8:30-31, And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. 31: And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
42. | “the deep” is the bottomless pit.
43. | People want to put a twist on the Word of God saying that Hell is a myth and Heaven is real.
44. | They are both literal and they are both real.
45. | During the last part of the great Tribulation Period it is clear that Satan is given the freedom that he has never had before; he is given the key to the bottomless pit.
46. | Things are so intense and so awful that men attempt to die during this period. Revelation 9:6, And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
47. | The Lord Jesus Christ is keeping them alive because He is longsuffering. 2 Peter 3:9, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. |
b. | And he opened the bottomless pit
1. | Revelation 9:2, And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
2. | Jesus gives Satan the keys to the bottomless pit along with permission to inflict this punishment upon the people of the Earth.
3. | Our next point makes it abundantly clear that out of the smoke came forth locusts that had a King over them. Revelation 9:11, And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
4. | The air was darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit reminds us of the smog in some of our major cities. The bottomless pit is opened and smoke is ascending out of it.
5. | God gives us a clear picture of the type of smoke and it spreads throughout the entire Earth. “and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.” |
c. | But only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
1. | Revelation 9:3-4, And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4: And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
2. | The men who have not the seal of God in their foreheads are begging for mercy and are the targets of these locusts.
3. | One Bible scholar gives us four reasons why he believes these are not ordinary locusts.
a. | They eat no vegetation. This can be back up with Verse 4.
b. | The locusts of the earth have no King. Proverbs 30:27, The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;
c. | In the plagues of Egypt, the Bible says there were no such locusts as they. Exodus 10:14, And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such.
d. | These are literal creatures representing literal animals.
4. | Joel prophesied of the coming plague of locusts. Joel 1:4, That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten.
5. | A working knowledge of the Old Testament is valuable to understand the Book of Revelation.
6. | The difference between the locusts here and the locusts mentioned in Joel is the characteristics of the locusts and the object of their destruction.
7. | They sting as scorpions and their object is evil men. |
d. | They should be tormented five months:
1. | Revelation 9:5, And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
2. | If you are saved and born again rejoice in the fact that you will not be here at that time.
3. | If I was an unbeliever it would frighten me to death; I would absolutely run to the Lord Jesus Christ and accept Him as my Saviour.
4. | These locusts sting through the tail; however, the sting is not fatal.
5. | It is very painful. Joshua 24:12, And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
6. | There are all types of things happening during this Tribulation Period that should open our eyes and turn us to the Lord Jesus Christ.
7. | Men and women have spiritualized the book of Revelation to the point they have taken the sting out of the scorpion.
8. | The Bible says their torment was the torment of a scorpion when he strikes a man however it was not a killing blow.
9. | Men attempt to die but they can’t. |
e. | And in those days shall men seek death
1. | Revelation 9:6, And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
2. | The pain is so bad but death flees from them.
3. | I do not believe that Satan wants this crowd to die because he does not want to see his army demolished.
4. | He still believes he has a chance.
5. | You and I know we are on the winning side; but only those of us who have committed our souls to the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:25, For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
6. | Men attempting to commit suicide reveals an awful time.
7. | It reveals a battle between light and darkness.
8. | Jesus Christ is the light; He came to save sinful mankind. Deuteronomy 30:19, I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
9. | We know that this is the consequence of a Christ-rejecting world.
10. | People are in rebellion. There are no good times during this period.
11. | This is God’s judgment that is falling. We cannot ignore the intensity.
12. | We still have men and women who haven’t made a decision for the Lord Jesus Christ.
13. | Everyone under the sound of God’s Word today; I beg you to come to the Saviour.
14. | This is an awful period of time that you do not want to get involved in. |
f. | And their power was to hurt men five months.
1. | Revelation 9:7-10, And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8: And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. 9: And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10: And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
2. | There is an extreme amount of nonsense that scholars have associated with these verses.
3. | This is so far above me until I cannot tell you anymore than what the Word of God reveals.
4. | I will not speculate; all I know is if I were unsaved this would be frightening, weird and unnatural description of a locust.
5. | However, we will continue to take the Word of God literally and let the Bible speak for Itself.
6. | I believe the shape of the locusts is as God said they were. Joel 1:6, For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.
7. | Their purpose was to hurt men for five months.
8. | This power is to antagonize man in a Christ-rejecting world.
9. | We cannot get away with thumbing our nose at God and believing there will be no consequences to follow.
10. | The most important thing we can do is make a decision for Christ.
11. | None of us want to go through such a period as this. This is the period of Woe, Woe, Woe. Revelation 8:13, And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
12. | God is going to put extreme pressure upon the earth during this period. |
4. | CONCLUSION | |
a. | My sinner friend, if you don’t know Jesus as personal Saviour, none of this is possible for you.
b. | Would you come to the side of the living Saviour today?
c. | Regardless of the fact that we have projected ourselves into eternity, the present is we must come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in this life.
d. | If we don’t know Him, we will be subjected to the wrath of God.
e. | The Bible says in Romans 3:23, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
f. | Romans 3:10, As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
g. | Romans 10:9-10, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10: For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
h. | Matthew 11:28-29, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
i. | Would you come to the side of the living Saviour today and be saved.
j. | Please stand. |
