MINISTRY OF THE WORD
AND NO MAN… WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE BOOK PASTOR HOWARD DANIEL, JR. SUNDAY MORNING, APRIL 10, 2016 SCRIPTURE READING: REVELATION 5:1-4
|
||
Revelation 5:3, And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. |
1. | BACKGROUND | |
a. | Please refer to the February 28, 2016 Evening Message for the Background |
2. | INTRODUCTION | ||
a. | As we begin Chapter 5 we find out it is a continuation of John’s vision in Chapter 4.
b. | The book really refers to a scroll and it has seven messages. Those seven messages had been sealed by the authority of God.
c. | The breaking of the seal was to reveal the message it contained. It took a special individual which is none other than Jesus Christ to break the seal. Revelation 5:1, And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
d. | He is called the Lion of the Tribe of Judah and He will reveal to the world the contents of the seven seals.
e. | As we look at the history of scrolls it normally had writings on only one side. A careful note these are written on both sides. The message that is here reveals the Tribulation Judgements of God.
f. | When I say Tribulation, I am referring to the Judgement for the Jews.
g. | If you recall in Chapter 4, we left the Church in Heaven. As we get into Chapter 5, we find that the Church, the body of believers, The Bride of Christ that have been raptured are still in Heaven. John 14:1-3, Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2: In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3: And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
h. | The Church will not be involved in any part of the Great Tribulation on Earth because the Church at this time will be in Heaven. I know that there are teachings that the Church will go through the Tribulation Period, but the people that are espousing that kind of philosophy do not understand the totality of scripture.
i. | Revelation makes is very plain that the Church is gone.
j. | The Throne was the center of Chapter 4, which is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ sitting on that throne. He is depicted as both a Lion and a Lamb. He is a lion because of Judgment. He is a lamb because he is our Saviour for the world.
k. | As we look deep into the Word of God we find there are three outbursts of praises in this Chapter that we will look at.
1. | The elders and the beast praise the Lamb for having redeemed them through His blood. Revelation 5:8-9, And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. 9: And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; He has given them authority to reign over the Earth. Revelation 5:10, And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
2. | A Host of Angels also praise the Lamb for glory and wisdom. Revelation 5:11-12, And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12: Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. In the area of creation they are worshipping both the Father and the Lamb. Revelation 5:13-14, And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. 14: And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
3. | The prayers of the saints are involved here in verse 8, Revelation 5:8, And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
l. | The Messianic Kingdom covered in Revelation 6:9-10 and Revelation 8:3 come into focus as well. Many times our emphasis in the past has been over the fact that The Lord Jesus Christ came to redeem mankind. This is very true and important for us to see. Revelation 6:9-10, And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: 10: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? Revelation 8:3, And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
m. | When Adam disobeyed God back in the Garden of Eden, not only was there the fall of man plunging the whole human race into sin but he also sold the Earth (world) to the devil. This series of verses in Chapter 5 deals with the title deed to the Earth (world). The Lord Jesus Christ has to come back and restore that title as well. Primarily the verses in this Chapter speak of that.
n. | We are on a mission now to get into the meat of the Word of God and see what Chapter 5 has to offer |
3. | FOUR POINTS TO THE MESSAGE
a. | And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book
1. | Revelation 5:1, And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
2. | John says “And” – We must understand what has gone on before. This is in addition to chapter 4 with the church in Heaven.
3. | “I saw” – This tells us that he was an eye-witness to the events that were taking place.
4. | It is very wonderful to see this book; God’s Word is all about teaching us from eye-witnesses, things that were seen and heard.
5. | We do not have to speculate or to add to God’s Word. He said exactly what He intended to say. He not only inspired it, He preserved it for every generation. Psalms 12:6-7, The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7: Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
6. | The Book of Revelation contains both fire and brimstone.
7. | God, the Lord Jesus Christ, is holding a scroll in His hand sealed with seven seals.
8. | We know that the term seven means completeness.
9. | Dr. Stauffer educates us on Roman law. “The Roman law required that a will be sealed seven times, as illustrated in the will left by Augustus and Vespasian.”
10. | It is interesting when we find that type of information about the Roman government.
11. | It makes us dig a little bit deeper into God’s Word.
12. | The term seven is used in the Bible on many occasions.
13. | The scroll is believed to be the title deed to the Earth (world).
14. | Jeremiah explains. Jeremiah 32:6-15, And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 7: Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it. 8: So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. 9: And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. 10: And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances. 11: So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open: 12: And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison. 13: And I charged Baruch before them, saying, 14: Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days. 15: For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.
15. | Jeremiah was instructed to have his servant buy some property and get the title deed to it because God promised that Israel will return to the land. Do not allow anyone to tell you that the church took over where Israel left off. Romans 11:2, God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,
16. | Israel is still very much a part of God’s program.
17. | The Lord Jesus Christ holds the title deed to the earth (world).
18. | Daniel 7:13-14, I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14: And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
19. | There can be no destruction of the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Luke 1:33, And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
20. | We believe this means the Lord Jesus Christ created it all. It is being handed over to Him a second time as a result of redeeming the entire human race along with the earth (world).
21. | The title deed of this world includes all that are in the world. All were made by Him. John 1:3, All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
22. | The book of Zechariah talks about this in some detail. Zechariah 5:1-3, Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. 2: And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. 3: Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.
23. | The flying roll is synonymous with the scroll in the Book of Revelation.
24. | The Lord Jesus Christ created the earth and now He has to redeem it. God the Father has committed all judgment to the Son.
25. | Israel has the covenant that has not been fulfilled. The Lord Jesus Christ will literally fulfill that covenant. Jeremiah 31:31, Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jeremiah 31:33, But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
26. | Then we see in Romans 11:26-27, And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
27. | Hebrews 10:16-18, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17: And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18: Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
28. | The old covenant that God had made with Israel depended upon man.
29. | The Ten Commandments contained do’s and don’ts.
30. | Man completely failed under the law.
31. | Now God is taking the same thing and is solving the problem with a new covenant. This new covenant depends upon the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work and not on man.
32. | Always remember, He is our righteousness. God is in the business of subtracting our sins; past, present and future and imputing His righteousness to us. Hebrews 10:18, Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. |
b. | Who is worthy to open the book
1. | Revelation 5:2, And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?,
2. | A strong angel represents power.
3. | There is no power on the face of the earth greater than the Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew 28:18, And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
4. | He proclaims that power through a loud voice. “And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice,” – This is speaking of making this covenant effective.
5. | In order for the covenant to be effective it must depend on Christ alone.
6. | “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?” – none other than the Lord Jesus Christ.
7. | The title deed to the Earth (world) has always belonged to the Creator. The Lord Jesus Christ had to redeem both the earth and mankind.
8. | Jesus Christ is in fact the Creator of the universe. Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
9. | He will be the one who loosens the seals and to take back what is in the hands of Satan. Ephesians 2:2, Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: John 12:31, Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. John 14:30, Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John 16:11, Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
10. | Notice the Search. |
c. | No man…was able to open the book
1. | Revelation 5:3, And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
2. | This eliminates all members of the Adamic race. The problem this day and time is that men want to be God. This absolutely will not work! Isaiah 29:11, And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
3. | There is only one God and that is the Lord Jesus Christ.
4. | He is manifested in three persons; the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Men and women have tried to deny this fact; but, there is no question about it. 1 John 5:7, For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
5. | There is also a witness in the earth as well. 1 John 5:8, And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
a. | The Spirit – represents the Holy Spirit.
b. | The Water – represents the Word of God.
c. | The Blood – Christ’s shed blood
6. | God simple plan of salvation has covered the entire spectrum. Adam lost dominion of the earth (world) through sin when he disobeyed God.
7. | Moses was the law-giver; however the law could not save because men could not live up to the law. David and his line failed also. None of Adam’s race can qualify to take care of this process; it is only the Redeemer of mankind.
8. | As said before: What God required, God had to provide through His perfect Son.
9. | 1 Timothy 3:16, And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. If God was not manifested in the flesh, we are all lost because there is no one worthy to redeem mankind.
10. | Satan is working overtime in order to confuse the members of the Body of Christ and is also confusing unbelievers that there is no hope.
11. | The Bible says there was a person available to open the seals and that was the Lord Jesus Christ. Notice this verse says, “Who is worthy” |
d. | No man was found worthy to open and to read the book,
1. | Revelation 5:4, And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
2. | We come back again and we see that man is totally depraved; no man was able to do the job.
3. | When it comes to the Word of God we must not listen to the words of men because they don’t know; we must go to the inspired, preserved Word of God for our answers.
4. | John is greatly disturbed because he cannot see anyone who is able to open the seals. John soon realizes that Deity sits at the right hand of the Father and is able to do the job. The Lion of the Tribe of Judah hath prevailed. Revelation 5:5, And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
5. | It appears that John has lost sight of the fact that God’s thoughts and ways are above our ways. When we look at things from an earthly point of view, we only see things that are temporal.
6. | God tells us not to focus on temporal things, but things that are unseen because they are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18, While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
7. | Is the earth going to continue in sin and sorrow as we see it today? Is there no future for the earth (world)?
8. | I believe God has told us that not only will He renovate the earth but He will also provide a change for our bodies. 1 Corinthians 15:51, Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
9. | Notice what the Apostle Paul says in Romans 8:23, And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
10. | In no uncertain terms the Lord Jesus Christ will sit on the Throne of David and rule and reign for a thousand years.
11. | John again is overwhelmed by the possibility that no man is found. Jesus is the man!
12. | Sin entered by Adam; but the Lord Jesus Christ brings in everlasting righteousness. Praise God! Romans 5:12, Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:15, But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
13. | Paul says in Romans 8:22, For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
14. | All the theories man has; like evolution, are totally false. We know God created the heavens and the earth. We know the Word of God is true and God cannot lie. Titus 1:2, In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; |
4. | CONCLUSION | |
a. | My sinner friend, if you don’t know Jesus as personal Saviour, none of this is possible for you.
b. | Would you come to the side of the living Saviour today?
c. | Regardless of the fact that we have projected ourselves into eternity, the present is we must come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in this life.
d. | If we don’t know Him, we will be subjected to the wrath of God.
e. | The Bible says in Romans 3:23, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
f. | Romans 3:10, As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
g. | Romans 10:9-10, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10: For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
h. | Matthew 11:28-29, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
i. | Would you come to the side of the living Saviour today and be saved.
j. | Please stand. |
